Celebrity engagement ring trends for 2020

Coloured stones have long been a prominent feature of fine jewellery collections, especially since Diana, Princess of Wales’ beautiful oval Kashmir sapphire. Many royals, including Sarah, Duchess of York, the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Eugenie of York have since followed suit. More recently Katy Perry selected a £3.7 million pink oval diamond surrounded by a diamond halo for her engagement to Orlando Bloom. Elizabeth Olsen, lead actress from the recent Avengers film, also opted for an emerald centre stone set within a halo of diamonds from husband-to-be Robbie Arnett.

Emerald Cut

Emerald cut diamonds are becoming increasingly popular for fine engagement rings. In recent times, celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, and Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney, have endorsed this cut with their engagement bands. Emerald cut stones offer an elegant, vintage or Art Deco flavour to a ring as demonstrated in the trilogy rings of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which are said to symbolise the past, present and future.

Pearls

Pearl has not been traditionally associated with engagement rings but that is starting to change. Most recently Emma Stone and Dave McCary, and Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail, chose pearl for their engagement rings. Pearl rings are particularly popular in Japan and the Far East and their appeal seems to be spreading with growing celebrity endorsement. Pearls are certainly a way to symbolise uniqueness and individuality and they were regarded by the ancients as embodying faith, loyalty and harmony. However, pearls do require special care and attention and they do not respond well to rough treatment by the wearer!

Art Deco

This year marks the centenary of the start of the Art Deco era in 1920 so there is perhaps no better time to created bespoke engagement rings inspired by that hedonistic time. Art Deco rings are characterised by geometric patterns and vibrant use of colour, often encompassing emerald and baguette cut emeralds, diamonds and rubies but there are no rules and no limit to the designs that can be created. Celebrity endorsement has come from Scarlett Johannson and Colin Jost, who opted for a brown pear cut stone set on a curved black band. Meanwhile Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix opted to propose to girlfriend Rooney Mara with a very unique Art Deco diamond creation.
