Kate Middleton: A modern fashion icon

Kate Middleton burst into the spotlight when she and Prince William met, and over the years as media attention has grown, she has caused waves within the fashion world. Nicknamed “the Kate effect”, clothes would fly off the hangers in both high fashion houses and high streets alike as soon as Kate wore a certain garment to an event. After Kate married William and became the Duchess of Cambridge, her time as a royal has given us a range of fashion moments; at times looking like a normal working mum, and others where she looks like she has just rolled out of Hollywood.

Here are some of our favourite Kate Middleton looks from over the years.

For the official portrait celebrating Prince Charles’s 70th birthday, Kate wore a demure Alessandra Rich polka-dot. This drew comparisons to Kate’s would-be mother-in-law Diana, who loved a  sharp contrasting collar and pieces that oozed glamour effortlessly. Definitely a great piece of inspiration when you want to look good, but trying to remain respectful or conservative.

A large part of her role as Duchess is attending events out and about across the UK . When deciding upon a suitable outfit for such events, early on in Kate’s royal duties she came upon the dress coat style outfit. This is a hybrid garment that can still look polished on a very blustery British day. Many of these coat dresses are military-inspired, such as this sky-blue outfit that looks striking whilst remaining respectful during important state engagements.

The extended Jubilee weekend provided us with many iconic fashion moments; but Kate’s lemon-coloured dress from Emilia Wickstead that she wore to the Jubilee service at St Paul’s Cathedral is the pick of the bunch. This vibrant outfit feels very similar to something that the Queen herself would wear, as the single bloc of colour means you can’t be lost in a crowd.
