The art of the celebrity pregnancy announcement
Rihanna broke the internet by announcing her first pregnancy; as she and her beau ASAP Rocky emerged in New York city bearing her baby bump, alongside a striking denim and bright pink outfit and a maximalist collection of jewellery.
Whilst Rihanna and the anticipation for her first child dominated the headlines, this style of pregnancy announcement isn’t revolutionary. Pregnancy announcements, and specifically celebrity ones, have become a feature of the social media era.
Here we will cover some of the biggest celebrity pregnancy announcements, and the most luxurious debut maternity outfits.
There are a number of styles of celebrity announcements that you can take inspiration from if you are planning on getting pregnant, or if you are pregnant and are planning on announcing it.
In many ways, you could describe Rihanna’s announcement as performance art. Her picture looked more like a statue of pregnant radiance and a sculpture that was dressed in jewellery; than a mere mortal walking around the streets of NYC.
Another pregnancy announcement that was closer to body art than a standard baby bump picture was Cardi B’s. She announced her pregnancy with a white plaster breastplate that covered both bump and bust. The plaster creation was formed by the master of resin and sculpture within the fashion world, Misha Japanwala, and was an innovative and thought provoking way to show off Cardi’s pregnant figure.
One of the most famous celebrity pregnancy photos from before the social media era was Demi Moore in 1991 on the front cover of Vanity Fair.
The cover was so famous that the nude pregnancy pose is now known as the “demi”. Other stars have emulated it to great success, such as Serena Williams.
As long as it is done well and composed correctly, you can’t really go wrong with this striking nude portrait to announce your pregnancy. It’s powerful, eye-catching and celebrates a pregnant mother’s body.
Slightly more perilous, 90’s music star Alanis Morissette announced her pregnancy on Instagram with a Demi-esque pose but underwater. Definitely much harder than Serena Williams’ shoot, but it does have a very interesting quality to it.
Whilst not announcing her pregnancy through naked snaps, Kim Kardashian didn’t resist flaunting her pregnant body as she moved through maternity.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel choose a very sensitive and low key announcement, gently kissing the bump in a picture that was shared on social media.
Kylie Jenner’s pregnancy announcement was closer to Timberlake and Biel than to her half-sister Kim Kardashian. Rather than posing nude, Kylie hid her pregnancy until after the birth of her daughter.
Kylie said, “I understand you’re used to me bringing you along on all my journeys. My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world. I knew for myself I needed to prepare for this role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress free, and healthy way I knew how.”, in her post.
After the announcement, she released a dedication video to her daughter that told the journey of her pregnancy that she had kept from sharing with the world.
Beyoncé’s announcement that she was pregnant with twins was truly a blockbuster moment. In her Instagram post, the most liked post on the platform in 2017, she showed off her bump in a floral themed picture that had her covered in a veil and an intriguing set of lingerie. The picture itself wasn’t particularly shocking, but the fact that it was Beyoncé announcing her pregnancy made it one of the most important celebrity stories of the 21st century.
